Forced ads

Posted on:June 16 2011

I just went to a game magazine website and was forced to watch a video ad, overlaying the whole website for 20 seconds. There was no close button, intentionally. Then, after about 18 seconds, a button like a close button appeared, but behold, it didn't have an 'x' on it but a half-circle, it was a 're-watch' button. Clicking on it caused me to be forced to watch that thing again. Great. Dear magazine, you've finally lost another reader. And no, I'm not going to install ad block software. Most websites work without those. There are lots of game news sites without this crap or too many ads.

Its odd you dont use adBlock yet. It just makes web more pleasant not seeing stuff you dont care for anyway.

But website owners earn money from that. I want to support the work if I like it.

Flashblock is the first thing I install after every browser update. I just hate those flash overlays.

Sure people make money from those ads. See at least me - i hardly ever press on ad. I probably could count such instances on fingers of my single hand. AdBlock for chromium works by adding large stylesheet ruleset that hides certain elements that display ads. Even if hidden, they are loaded in background, therefore ad companies record it as displayed ad. And as you know they pay for clicks and per 1000 impressions or so. Site owners dont loose much :]
