7-zip

If you ever recieved a mail with a bigger attachment from me, you might have noticed that I am usually choosing 7zip to compress it. 7-zip is a great file archiver just like ZIP or RAR, but it has several advantages: It has a better compression ratio, usually my .7z files are half as big as .zip files, depending on the type of their content. With the usual combination of source code files, binaries and some images, I'm usually getting excellent compression results. 7-Zip uses an optional very secure encryption method (AES), supports huge file sizes, and best: It is open source and free.
In addition it is able to compress into other file formats (ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR) and decompress even more (RAR, CAB, ISO, ARJ, LZH, CHM, Z, CPIO, RPM, DEB and NSIS). Simply a great piece of software.

I’ve been using it for years and love it.

It’s great, but expect some people to complain. I tried to switch to bzip2 a long time ago (pre-7z) and got huge amounts of complaints from WinZip users who couldn’t open them. No amount of ‘get a bloody decent archive tool then, they’re free’ cut any ice with these people. Some people just don’t want anything but zip and will crucify you if you try to make them. ;)

7zip does self-extracting archives which is an alternative of course. Then people will just accuse you of trying to distribute viruses ;)

Yes, great tool. Winzip & Winrar are long gone from my computers.

Yep. Another good thing is that it produces plain old ZIP archives as well, and they are a bit better compressed than with other ZIP tools!

I like 7zip but I still use winrar as my main archive tool. Maybe it is just me but I like it better and it seems to be fast and simple to use.

Best archive tool for windows is IzArc in my opinion. Supports a lot of archive types and is freeware. It’s not OpenSource, though.

I agree, 7Zip is the best.
Besides, someday i notice very nice feature of 7Zip (this feature hasn’t any other archiver): 7Zip scans files for compression if they repeat and do not compress same files twice.
Check this out: – create any folder – place there some files and make some files copies (you may rename them and/or place in a different sub-folder) – pack this folder with 7Zip and with another archiver. 7Zip somehow detects file duplication and that is why it will produce much smaller archive :)

I have used 7-zip for a long time, and have been extremely impressed. I really like the 7-zip backend library, too, which can be incorporated directly into many applications, including games.
